We showed that physiological properties of a kidney cell type could be greatly altered by means of a custom-designed nanotopography without the use of any biological molecules. The cell is considered as an organic machinery that senses and interprets information from the immediate environment and eventually responds to environmental cues by adjusting gene expression levels. Mechanistic studies based on this preliminary finding, at the interface between cells and nanoscale structures, will advance the understanding of how cells interact with the outer environment physically.
